As you leave Lhasa behind, the journey leads you to the serene turquoise waters of the sacred Yamdrok Lake, a breathtaking sight that paves the way to the ancient town of Gyantse. Here, you will marvel at the historic Kumbum Chörten, a unique monument of Tibetan Buddhism. The path continues through the charming town of Shigatse and the revered Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lamas, until you finally stand in awe at the North Base Camp of Mount Everest.
At the foot of the world’s highest peak, you will find solace in a modest lodge, where you can visit a nearby temple and witness the majestic spectacle of sunset and sunrise over Everest. The journey then descends through a dramatic gorge to the border of Nepal, where the vibrant city of Kathmandu awaits. Amidst its kaleidoscope of cultures, colors, and ancient traditions, your journey comes to a close, leaving you with a heart full of awe and memories that will last a lifetime.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Chengdu
Upon arrival in Chengdu, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. In the evening, attend an orientation meeting with your trip leader to discuss high-altitude travel and the dos and don’ts for Lhasa and Tibet. Get an early night’s rest before heading to Tibet at dawn.
Days 2-4
Flying to Lhasa and Exploring the Forbidden City
Take an early morning flight to Lhasa (11,975 ft.), enjoying spectacular panoramic views of the Himalaya. Upon arrival, drive through the beautiful countryside of central Tibet to reach Lhasa, where the iconic Potala Palace stands majestically. Over the next few days, explore Lhasa’s most significant historical and cultural sites, including Drepung Monastery, once the world’s largest with 10,000 monks; Nechung Monastery; the Jokhang temple, Tibet’s holiest religious shrine; and the vibrant Barkhor markets. Visit the monumental Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, and Sera Monastery, known for its lively debating sessions.
Day 5
Journey to Gyantse via Yamdrok Lake
Drive along the old trade route, passing the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s four sacred lakes and a major pilgrimage site. The breathtaking journey takes you over high mountain passes adorned with prayer flags before reaching Gyantse, situated in the fertile Nyang-chu Valley.
Days 6-7
Gyantse, Shigatse, and a Day Hike to Ngor
Visit Gyantse’s sublime Kumbum chörten at Pelkor Chöde Monastery, blessed with stunning Buddhist murals, frescoes, and statuary. Drive to Shigatse and explore the Tashilhunpo Monastery, associated with the Panchen Lamas. The next day, embark on a 4-hour hike over a 14,000 ft pass near Ngor Monastery, founded in 1429 as a Sakya monastery. Return to Shigatse and explore its markets, bazaars, and the Shigatse Dzong.
Day 8
Crossing the Plateau to Shegar
Embark on a scenic drive across the Tibetan Plateau, crossing the 17,121 foot high Jia Tsuo La pass before descending to the small town of Shegar at 14,300 ft. Rest here before heading to Everest Base Camp the following morning.
Day 9
Rongbuk Monastery and Everest Base Camp
Depart Shegar before dawn to reach the top of Pang La pass (17,000 ft) at sunrise, witnessing a breathtaking panorama of Himalayan peaks. Descend to the Rongbuk Valley, arriving at Everest Base Camp by late morning. Spend the afternoon photographing Everest from the historic Rongbuk Monastery, where you’ll spend the night in the shadow of Chomolungma, the Goddess Mother of the World.
Days 10-11
Crossing the Himalaya to Nepal and Kathmandu
Wake up early to see Everest at sunrise before driving through the Himalaya, from the barren Tibetan Plateau to the lush foothills of Nepal. Cross several high passes with spectacular views of the Langtang Himal before reaching the bustling border town of Kriyong. The next day, cross the Friendship Bridge into Nepal, where you’ll be met by your Nepalese staff for the drive to Kathmandu. Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s ancient bazaars and historical sites before a special farewell dinner.
Day 12
Departure from Kathmandu
Transfer to Kathmandu’s airport for your flights to respective Asian transit cities and onward connections to the USA and Europe.
